Devon I beat Cornwall I (10.5-5.5)

Match report by Jon Underwood (16 February 2020)

Despite the atrocious weather conditions both sides managed to field a full team of 16 players. Sincere thanks to everyone who turned out to play, after some pretty grim journeys.

We outgraded Cornwall by a pretty hefty margin and would have been expected to prevail, so they did well to keep the deficit down to 5 points, and it might have been closer still but for our dogged defending on some of the last boards to finish. Congratulations to Dominic, Tim, Alan, John and Mike who provided our other wins.

We have now retained the WECU first division championship and move on to the national stages. Our great strength compared to other counties is the commitment of the players – hopefully that will against be in evidence this summer!

Finally, thanks to Tony Tatam who set everything up and put it away again as well as providing refreshments – it is very much appreciated.
