Devon I beat Somerset I (10-6)

Match report by Jon Underwood (8 December 2019)

There were a couple of Somerset players missing at the start, leading to a substitution on board one. Bill Ingham thought the match was on Sunday, so we ending up defaulting board 12, but Alan Brusey levelled the score very quickly. We had two quick draws from the Bacons, plus another two from Steve Martin and John Wheeler in the middle somewhere. The last two games to finish were also draws from Tim Paulden and Meyrick Shaw.

Most of the rest of the games were Devon wins (Jos, both Pauls, Dominic, Chris and Brian), whose details I was too tied up in my game to share. I was winning (+12 on the computer) but somehow committed an oversight that would be embarrassing for a 50-rated player and lost in a few moves. Our only other defeat was Stephen Homer in an opposite coloured bishop endgame.

We won 10-6 in the end, not quite what the grades would have predicted (sorry!) but we will still retain our WECU title should we beat Cornwall next year. Thanks to everyone who played.
